The Texas Collegiate League is proud to announce that thirty-six of its current and former players were selected in the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
The first TCL player off the board was Todd Cunningham formerly of the Brazos Valley Bombers. He was selected with the third pick of the second round by the Atlanta Braves In his time with the Bombers, Cunningham led the TCL in batting average and finished third in hits. The Alabama native was the starting center fielder for the 2008 TCL All-Star team and was named as the TCL’s number two prospect by Baseball America.
James Nelson, the next TCL player selected, was drafted only eleven picks later by the Milwaukee Brewers with the fourteenth pick of the second round. During his time in the TCL, Nelson played for the McKinney Marshals where he was named the 2008 TCL Freshman of the Year after leading the league with 66 strikeouts and holding opponents to only a .188 batting average.
Overall, the TCL saw seven players drafted in the first six rounds and twenty-eight drafted on the second of the three days of the draft. Truly, this successful draft continues to show the TCL’s status as one of the premier summer collegiate leagues in America, providing major league teams players with the experience and training needed to succeed at the next level.
