Daryl Maday had an impressive TCL debut Monday night in Highland Park’s 7-2 victory over Weatherford at Scotland Yard. The righthander from the University of Arkansas allowed just four hits and one run, a solo homer by Spencer Jackson in the 4th inning, in five innings with five strikeouts. Matt Langwell and Stuart Sutherland held the Wranglers to three hits over the final four frames.
Ryan Hill homered and Rich O’Brien was 3-4 for the Blue Sox. Donald Furrow allowed nine hits and six runs in seven innings in suffering his first defeat of the summer.
Infielder Ben Burum of the Mineral Wells Steam and lefthander Josh Forester of the Graham Roughnecks have been selected as the D-Bat Texas Collegiate League Player and Pitcher of the Week for June 13-19, it was announced Monday by the TCL office.
Burum, a sophomore from North Central Texas College, batted .375 (9-24) with seven runs scored, two doubles, four homers, and ten rbi in six games for the Steam last week. The lefthanded batter tied a Texas Collegiate League record with three homers on June 17 at Denton, driving in six runs in that game. He hit safely in his final four games of the week at .500 (9-18).
Burum is batting .330 with five homers, second in the TCL, and 13 rbi in 11 games for Mineral Wells this summer.
Forester, a sophomore from Rice University, issued five hits and one run in 12 innings with four walks and 12 strikeouts in his two starts for the week. The lefthander had no decision versus Mineral Wells on June 14 (5 ip, 1 h, 0 r, 2 bb, 7 so) and pitched a complete game, 7-1 victory versus Denton in the opener of a doubleheader on June 18 (7 ip, 4 h, 1 r-er, 2 bb, 5 so).
Forester is 1-1, 1.06 in three starts for the Roughnecks this summer.
TEXAS COLLEGIATE LEAGUE SIGNING UPDATE
As of June 20, a total of 12 players with Texas Collegiate League ties have signed professional contracts since the end of the Major League Draft two weeks ago. Of that number, nine were selected by major league teams in the draft, two have signed as undrafted free agents, and one player has signed with the Independent Northern League.
A total of 28 players with TCL ties were selected in the MLB draft. That included participants in the 2004 TCL season and players on the 2005 rosters. The signing update:
