Bryan-College Station (August 14, 2016)-  Mother Nature may have slowed the Bombers down but it couldn’t stop them as Brazos Valley completed the Road to Four with a shutout victory over the Acadiana Cane Cutters.
The rain flooded Nutrabolt Stadium and forced the Bombers to play in Mumford but the change of venue did not change the determination of Brazos Valley as they defeated the Cane Cutters for the second year in a row. The Bombers are now the first team to repeat, three-peat and now four-peat in the Texas Collegiate League and the first team to 4-peat in the history of summer Collegiate baseball in the United States.
The Cane Cutters gave the Bombers the most trouble this year, defeating them four times but that did not derail Brazos Valley as they rode good pitching and timely hitting all the way to the winners circle.Catcher Spencer Hemphill put the Bombers on the board in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly that scored Tim Lichty and gave Brazos Valley an early 1-0 lead.
Brazos Valley would do most of their damage in the bottom of the fifth as they scored three runs. After a Riley Schaefer stolen base, Logan Bottrell doubled with a line drive to left field that scored Schaefer. TCL Batting Champion Anthony Herrera scored Bottrell with an RBI double of his own. Herrera scored two batters later, off a Zack McGuire single.
The shutout was the Bombers 12th of the year and was a combined effort by a pitching staff that led the TCL in wins, ERAs, hits allowed and strikeouts. Mitchell Hines started the game on Saturday night and gave up a couple of hits but didn’t allow a run in two innings of work. Garrett Hofstad started the Sunday portion of the game and handled two-thirds of an inning and recorded a strikeout. Brett Seeburger followed up Hofstad and dealt three quick innings where he allowed just one hit and struck out two Cane Cutters. Riley McCauley would then no-hit Acadiana for two innings and turned the final inning over to the Bombers strikeout leader and local product, Willy Amador.
After walking the first batter, Amador settled in and struck out Dom Bifano and Trey Jimmerson. With the crowd on its feet, Amador fired two quick strikes on Trenton Buckhorn. On a 1-2 count, Amador blew his final pitch by a desperate swing from Buckhorn and the celebration was on. Hemphill ran to the mound followed by the rest of the team to mob the Bryan native.
Brazos Valley would like to thank all the Bomber faithful who made the trek to Mumford on a Sunday afternoon to cheer on the home team.
