Bryan-College Station, TX (June 24, 2010) – The Brazos Valley Bombers beat the North Texas Copperheads 13-6 tonight, on the strength of some excellent pitching and outstanding hitting. Over 1000 fans joined the Bombers on Thirsty Thursday presented by Western Beverages for Twilight night, in honor of the upcoming film in the smash hit saga, and were treated to quite a show.

The Copperheads got things started in the fourth with three runs to gain an early 0-3 lead. The Bombers responded right away, as they often do, in the bottom of the inning. After Rodarrick Jones walked to load the bases, Greg Olson started his incredible night with a 2 RBI single, scoring Tanner Toal and Casey Dykes. Isaac Nuti followed with another 2 RBI single, scoring Jones and Olson, who advanced to second on a smart base running play, to make the score 4-3. The Bombers did not stop there though, with Nuti and Josh McElroy scoring on an error by the shortstop. Ryan Morrow then scored on another error by the shortstop and John Cannon, who came in to replace the injured Toal, scored on a wild pitch, giving the Bombers an 8-3 advantage.

The Copperheads fought back, scoring on back to back RBI doubles in the fifth to bring the score to 8-5. The Bombers weren’t done however, adding one more in the fifth with Nuti scoring on a Cannon bases loaded walk to make the score 9-5. In the top of the seventh Copperhead Marcellous Biggins and an assistant coach were ejected from the game after a close call at first base. The coach followed the ejection by tossing first base some thirty feet into foul territory.

The Bombers ignored the distraction and added four more for good measure in the eighth, scoring Cory Stooksbury on an Olson RBI single, Morgan Mickan on a sacrifice fly by McElroy, Olson on a Morrow RBI double and Nuti on a Patterson RBI double, making the score 13-5. The Copperhead pushed one across in the top of the ninth, but were unable to complete the comeback, losing 13-6, after having little luck against the trio of Ryan Eastman, Matt Passauer, and Blake Fonfara on the mound.

The win moves the 11-7 Bombers back within half a game of first place in the Texas Collegiate League standings. The team will be back in action against the Copperheads tomorrow night on Fireworks Friday. It will be Winter in June night at Brazos Valley Bank Ballpark, and as is the case every Friday, a spectacular fireworks show will follow the game.
