Coppell, TX- For the second consecutive night, the North Texas Copperheads (4-5) used a strong performance on the mound to add another win to their record, while the McKinney Marshals (5-4) dropped their third consecutive game.
On the heels of last night’s 2-1 victory over East Texas, pitcher Teddy Nowell (TCU) paired with Zak Hermans (Princeton) to allow one hit in the 5-1 win. Nowell (1-0) got his first win on the season, and kept the Marshals hitless through the first six innings. The future Horned Frog finished the night with seven innings pitched, one hit, no runs, three walks and six strikeouts. Hermans allowed a run in the ninth after a walk and wild pitch allowed a runner to reach third base and eventually score on a ground out.
The Copperheads amassed five hits on the night, including doubles from Zach Voight (Navarro), J.T. Files (Navarro) and Ryan Akins (New Mexico JC). Akins’ double in the fourth gave him his second RBI on the night after a second inning sacrifice fly.
The win moves North Texas into a tie for fourth place in the Texas Collegiate League, and only one and a half games out of first place. McKinney dropped a half game out of first place and into third place in the league.
