Through six games, Zac Fisher had shown he could be one of the Pump Jacks’ top hitters.

Game seven cemented his status.

Fisher had three hits in three at-bats, including his team’s first home run of the season, walked three times and drove in five runs in leading the Pump Jacks to an 11-8 win over the North Texas Copperheads at Coppell.

Fisher, starting behind the plate, knocked in the first East Texas run with a first-inning single. In his next plate appearance, Fisher crushed a soaring drive to right-center field for a three-run home run. That shot broke the game open as part of a five-run third inning in which the Pump Jacks batted around.

Brandon Wood made his season debut with a 1 for 4 day at the plate, including a double to drive in the other two third-inning runs and extend the lead to 6-0.

Head Coach Ben Taylor’s squad used a discerning eye at the plate, taking 11 walks, and benefitted from six North Texas errors. The Pump Jacks also wreaked havoc on the base paths, stealing seven bases without being caught and continually taking the extra base.

East Texas pitching did its job in quieting the Copperhead attack. Starter Tyler Mack, also making his Pump Jack debut, pitched five strong innings, allowing two runs on two hits with six strikeouts to earn the win. Mack (1-0) didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning, when Matt Shortall led off with a home run and Jason Krizan doubled in a run to cut the Jacks’ lead to four.

The Copperheads scored twice again in the sixth inning on a single and four walks, but East Texas put the game out of reach in the seventh frame. Wood opened with a walk and moved over when Jesse Santo was hit by a pitch and Russell LaFleur laid down a sacrifice bunt. Leadoff hitter Blake Ellender singled in Wood, Greg Fontenot flied to center for an RBI and Jarid Scarafiotti reached on an error before stealing second base. Clean-up man Fisher singled in Scarafiotti for his fifth RBI and a 10-4 lead.

Not a team to go quietly, North Texas pulled within four of the Pump Jacks on a J.T. File home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

With two outs in the top of the eighth inning, Santo took a walk and stole second base. LaFleur hit a shot to Copperhead second sacker Marcellous Biggins, who threw the ball away. Santo came home for an 11-6 Pump Jack lead.

Andy Steinmetz, who took over on the mound to open the seventh inning, ran into trouble in the bottom of the ninth. He allowed two singles, a walk and an error in right field as two runs crossed the plate. With the tying run coming up in the form of Krizan, Dusty Ross was brought in. Ross caught Krizan looking on a 3-2 count to end the contest and earn the save.

The Pump Jacks return to Coppell to face the Copperheads Saturday night at 7:05 pm.

After taking Sunday off, the Jacks return home on Monday and Tuesday. Monday night’s contest against the Alexandria Aces is the Jacks’ first Kids Eat Free Night of the season. All children 12 and under will receive a voucher for a free hot dog, chips, and a drink, just for attending the game!

The Pump Jacks welcome Victoria back to East Texas on Tuesday for another Pump Jacks Dollar Day. On Tuesday, one dollar will get you a regular hot dog, a regular soft drink, or a popcorn, all night long!

After a pair of games on the road and an off-day, the Jacks will return home again on Saturday, June 19, with a giveaway night to kick off a stretch of seven home games in eight days.
