The East Texas Pump Jack pitching staff continues to dominate, and Thursday night they got help from the offense.

A night after allowing just one run in a loss, the Pump Jack pitchers held the North Texas Copperheads to one score and the offense scored three runs in the middle innings for a 3-1 win.

For the third time in six second-half contests, the pitchers allowed their opponent one run or less. Thursday night’s score came right away in the first inning.

Abel Gonzales, on the mound the night after starting at first base, earned two quick outs in the top of the first before a double. The next hitter singled in the run, and Gonzales loaded the bases with walks. He got out of the jam, however, by inducing a harmless fly ball.

That was all Gonzales would give the Copperheads. After giving up a hit in the second inning, Gonzales  allowed just four more runners on a walk, hit batter, and two errors. He ended his night after seven solid frames, striking out six in the process. Chase Adams was hit for a single in a scoreless eighth inning, and Dusty Ross had a perfect ninth frame for his seventh save.

Meanwhile, the Pump Jack offense took a few innings to warm up. They loaded the bases on walks and a hit-by-pitch in the third inning but couldn’t score,

Lee Orr made a difference in the fourth inning. Orr, who had been struggling in the second half, drew a one-out walk. In the blink of an eye he was on third, stealing his 15th and 16th bases of the season. Orr still has not been caught on the basepaths. Michael Haynes skied a ball to left field, allowing Orr to score for a sacrifice fly, and the game was tied at one.

Brian Peters led off the fifth with a solid single for the first Jack hit. Alex Fuselier’s bunt advanced him to second, but Peters took matters into his own hands with a steal of third base. Aaron McCain’s sacrifice fly to center gave the Pump Jacks a 2-1 lead

Orr stepped up in the sixth inning and lashed a ball down the line. The left fielder got to the ball quickly and threw it in, but Orr turned on the jets and coasted into second base for a double. Haynes singled and Orr crossed the plate, the second RBI for Haynes and second run for Orr.

The Pump Jacks stay on top of the TCL second-half standings at 4-2. They are 18-13 overall.

After two games at the Alexandria Aces, the Pump Jacks return home for a Sunday contest with the Texas Tomcats. Sunday is Longview News Journal Night at historic Driller Park.
