McKinney whiffed a Texas Collegiate League regular and postseason record 19 batters in a 6-0 victory over the Denton Outlaws Saturday night in the third TCL Championship playoffs.

The Marshals joined Coppell (2004) and Denton (2005) as the first three winners of the prestigious summer league crown.

Starting pitcher and TCL Championship Series Outstanding Player Allen Harrington (Lamar) set the stage for the triumph by striking out 16 hitters and walking just two over 7 2/3 innings and 106 pitches. He allowed a first inning double by the Outlaws’ Craig Corriston (Paris JC) for the lone Denton hit of the contest and combined with relief men Michael Gunter (Blinn JC) and Matt Smith (Wichita State) to fan 19 of the possible 27 hitters for outs in the contest. Gunter retired the only man he faced on a K in the bottom of the eighth inning while Smith struck out two of the four hitters he faced in the ninth to end the record evening.

The 19 Ks topped the previous highs for any TCL contest by Austin Creps of McKinney and Texas A&M in the 2005 TCL title game – a 3-1 loss to Denton – and 15 strikeouts earlier this year by Coppell’s Jess Todd (Navarro) against Weatherford on July 22, 2006.

In a game delayed 90 minutes by heavy rain in the Denton County area, the Marshals struck for two runs in the top of the third innings and never were headed.

An error, single and double play groundout brought home the first McKinney marker before SS Michael Richard (Prairie View A&M) launched his first home run of the year in 43 regular-year or postseason games as a solo blast over left field with two outs in the second.

The Marshals scored twice in the fifth on a two-run homer by Jeff Texada (Alabama) before finishing their offense in the top of the sixth. A two-base throwing error on Aaron Grivalja’s (Liberty) sacrifice bunt led to run No. 5, and OF Wilson Tucker (Belmont) plated the final tally with a RBI single.

The two-game sweep was a first in TCL history after Coppell edged Graham 2-1 in games in ’04 and Denton won 2-of-3 over McKinney last year to set the stage for this year’s championship rematch.

The Outlaws of coach Derek Matlock entered the 2006 title series with a 6-1 record in postseason play and defending the TCL crown. McKinney swept four games over Coppell (league-best 31-17 mark in regular-season play) and the Outlaws to grab all the ’06 marbles.

McKinney, coached by TCL all-time coaching wins’ leader Kyle Hope (91-57 since 2004), became the first home team to win a game in the TCL Championship Series Friday night after downing Denton 11-1 at Gabe Nesbitt Field. The visiting team was 6-0 in the six previous contests of the title round.

The Marshals’ 16-run margin over two games also easily was the most dominating of any TCL Championship Series after the first six contests were all decided by two runs or less.
