Mineral Wells Steam 2004 and ’05 infielder Parker Dalton of Texas A&M has been selected as both 2006 NCAA Division I Male Sportsmanship Award recipient as well the 2005-06 Big 12 Conference Male Sportsperson of the Year. The NCAA Sportsmanship Award honors student-athletes who, through their actions in the competitive arena of intercollegiate athletics, have demonstrated one or more of the ideals of sportsmanship; including fairness, civility, honesty, unselfishness, respect and responsibility. Selections are made by the NCAA Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct. Dalton was presented his award during Texas A&M’s game vs. Louisiana Tech on Saturday, September 23. He started 56 games for the ’06 Aggies of coach Rob Childress and was the fourth-leading hitter among regulars as a second baseman for the squad. The Houston, Texas, resident played welcomed six Tulane athletic teams to the A&M campus in September 2005 after they were displaced by Hurricane Katrina. As president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, he organized Aggie student-athletes to greet the new Tulane students and administrators while helping to integrate them into the Aggie community. For the AggiesCan group in October 2005, student-athletes from both schools worked together to collect canned food and monetary donations for the local food bank. Dalton also helped organize A&M athletes to attend Tulane sporting events held on the A&M campus. When the semester ended, he initiated a "Final Wave Goodbye" party to celebrate the time on the A&M campus of the Green Wave student-athletes in 2005. Tulane students and student-athletes attended classes at Texas A&M from Sept.-Dec. 2005. Dalton volunteered for the Toys 4 Tots drive that collected approximately 1,700 toys for distribution and AggiesCan, which collected 150,000 cans and $3,000 for hurricane relief. He also participated in the Coat Drive that collected hundreds of coats for the local mission. The Aggies’ team captain arranged for the baseball squad to work at two events and 100 percent of the team was in attendance. He has been a solid participant in the Breakaway Prayer team and has led weekly bible studies at Texas A&M. The TCL Mineral Wells standout assisted in Gamma Phi Beta’s Crescent King Philanthropy Fundraiser for Camp Fire USA and working as a "Fish Aide" to help the Student Government Association with various service projects. Dalton also received the Buck Weirus Spirit Award, Texas A&M’s highest honor for student participation which recognizes leadership, community involvement and academic accomplishments.
