Baseball is a mere days away for the three time defending Texas Championship League winners, the Brazos Valley Bombers. The Bombers are looking to continue their impressive run of success in the TCL in search of their fourth straight league title. The team opens up this season on Friday May 27th, against the Woodlands Strykers.
The Bombers will be led by head coach Curt Dixon who is the pitching coach at Eastern Oklahoma University, a position he has held for five years. Dixon has been the head coach of the Bombers for the past three years, serving in that role for each of the championship seasons.
The Bombers have many returning players this season such as outfielders Ben Hollas and Matt Valdez, and catcher Henri Lartigue. New players that the Bombers are hoping to get a lot out of include pitcher McGregor Hines, and infielders Hunter Wilson and Ryan Olenek.
The freshman righty, McGregor Hines, returns home to Bryan-College Station from the University of Florida. In his senior year of high school, Hines recorded a 10-2 average with a 1.27 ERA and 84 strikeouts. While he saw limited time in his first year in Gainesville, Hines is looking to make strides this summer and the Bombers are hoping to get big contributions from him.
Hunter Wilson, a sophomore who played this past season at Eastern Oklahoma State, recorded a .313 average with 5 home runs, 19 RBIs and 25 runs scored. The young shortstop will also bring some speed to the Bombers as he had stolen 6 bases. Wilson will be transferring to the University of Arkansas next fall.
Ryan Olenek is a freshman shortstop from Ole Miss has hit for a .271 average to go with 2 home runs, 27 RBIs, 27 runs scored and a .988 fielding percentage. Olenek played his high school ball in the state of Florida where he was a 2015 Perfect Game All American Honorable Mention.
The Bombers are looking forward to a 2016 season in hopes of their fourth consecutive title and these are just a few of the players that they will need major contributions from to help them fulfill that mission.
The Bombers are set to take the field on May 27th to begin their “Road to Four” at home against the Acadiana Cane Cutters.
