With a star-studded batting lineup and dominating pitchers, the third annual Texas Collegiate League All-League Team is one of the nations finest summer amateur contingents.
Player of the Year Aljay Davis of Denton at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (a 2007 Oklahoma baseball signee) had some of the top overall numbers of collegiate summer league participants. He led the league with a .355 batting average, tied with All-League 2B Matt Cavagnaro with 60 hits, led the circuit with 47 runs scored, tied for second with two triples, added eight doubles, 27 RBI (three away from a Top Five league standing), and stole 23 bases (third in the TCL). He also led Denton to its second straight Rogers Hornsby Division title and a berth in the TCL Championship Series against McKinney.
Pitcher of the Year Randy Boone (pictured right) of Coppell and Texas had phenomenal regular-season numbers and then twirled a no-hitter for six innings in the title game of the Tris Speaker Division playoffs. Boone closed 6-0, was second in the TCL with a 1.09 ERA behind Dentons Kurt Pessa at 0.00 for 34 1/3 innings, struck out 65 hitters in 58 innings, allowed 31 hits, and yielded just 10 total runs (seven earned).
Freshman of the Year OF Aaron Luna of Euless and Rice came back from a lengthy postseason appearance (2-2 record in the NCAA World Series) with the Owls and batted .299 with two homers and 16 RBI in 26 games. The Southlake Carroll High School two-sport star produced nine doubles and had a .471 slugging percentage in his first summer campaign with wood bats. He also won the Compass Bank TCL Home Run Derby on July 10 with six home runs in two rounds at Roger Williams Ballpark in Weatherford.
Coach of the Year Derek Matlock guided Denton to back-to-back Rogers Hornsby Division crowns and a final regular-season record of 28-20 (two more wins than his 05 squads) while helping the Outlaws lead the TCL in team batting average at .259 and in home runs with 29. His aggressive approach to base running helped Denton steal a league-most 101 bases in 125 attempts over 48 games (81 percent success rate), and he has guided the Outlaws to six TCL playoff wins (division and championship series) in his first seven postseason contests. He led Denton to the 05 TCL crown and has the Outlaws in the 2006 finals against McKinney.
The remainder of the standout edition features eight different TCL teams, represents seven NCAA Division I conferences and two junior college leagues, and two Denton stalwarts who both competed at Long Beach State in 2006. Outlaws OF Jose Hernandez led the TCL with 41 RBI while slamming five home runs while 3B Matt Cline batted .306 with 45 hits and 17 RBI and solid defense for the division champs.
Besides Boone as the starting right-hander, lefty Donald Furrow of Weatherford and TCU earned All-League honors with a record 83 innings pitched, a 5-2 record with 1.52 ERA in 16 games (10 starts), two complete games, and 74 strikeouts. All-TCL relief ace Jake Wortham of Plano and BYU had a 1.49 ERA (fourth among all pitchers in the league with a minimum of 20 innings pitched), three saves, and 24 whiffs in 30-plus innings while making the 2006 TCL Brookshire-McCormicks All-Star Game roster.
Five All-TCL performers will be competing Friday-Saturday/Sunday (if necessary) in the TCL Championship playoffs beginning at 7:05 p.m. in McKinney at Gabe Nesbitt Field.
There were no repeat performers from the 2005 All-TCL team after 10 of the 12 members either were drafted in the Major League Baseball Free Agent Draft or signed free agent contracts.
