Over the last ten days, pitchers bound for the 2005 Texas Collegiate League season have turned in some fine performances for their schools. Here is a rundown of the top efforts (stats through games of March 10):

RHP Stuart Sutherland (Dallas Baptist/Highland Park): The junior worked nine shutout innings versus UC-Irvine on March 4, allowing no hits with one walk and five strikeouts. He had no decision as DBU lost on an unearned run in the bottom of the 10th inning, 1-0.
For his effort, Sutherland was selected as a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball and as the NCAA Division I Independent Pitcher of the Week. He is 1-1, 1.89 in seven outings for the Patriots this spring.
Sutherland was 4-4 in 8 starts with the Mineral Wells Steam last summer.

RHP Josh Geer (Rice/McKinney): The junior continues to excel for the Owls. His latest outing was a 12-1 victory over 22nd ranked Southern California on March 5 in the Round Rock College Classic at Dell Diamond. Geer turned in Rice’s first complete game of the season, allowing 4 hits and run in 7 innings with 5 strikeouts. The righthander improved to 4-0, 1.11 with 30 strikeouts in 32.1 innings. In addition, Geer has been added to the 2005 Wallace Watch by the College Baseball Foundation, a listing of the nation’s top college players who are in the running for the Brooks Wallace Award.

RHP Chance Corgan (Texas A&M/Euless): The freshman continued to pitch well for the 9th ranked Aggies, defeating Texas State, 12-2 on March 6 in the Round Rock Classic. Corgan issued one hit in 5 shutout innings to lower his season era to 0.66 in six games.

LHP Jordon Street (Texas/Denton): In just his 2nd collegiate appearance, the freshman pitched 5 shutout innings in relief in the Longhorns 8-3 loss to 16th ranked Arizona on March 5. Street, brother of Oakland A’s pitcher Huston Street and fellow Texas freshman hurler Juston Street (Denton), issued just one hit. He has pitched 5.2 scoreless innings in his two appearances for the top ranked Longhorns.

RHP Eddie Degerman (Rice/Denton): The junior started against the number one Texas Longhorns on March 9, permitting one hit and no runs in 5 innings. He had no decision as Texas went on for a 7-0 victory. Degerman is 1-0, 2.29 in 5 appearances with the Owls this spring.

ARKANSAS: The 10th ranked Razorbacks (13-1) have been aided by the offense of 1B Danny Hamblin (Coppell), who is batting .319 with 8 rbi. In last weekend’s sweep of Illinois-Chicago, Hamblin had 3 hits and a homer on Friday and drove in 3 runs the following day. DH Clint Arnold (Weatherford) has a .296 average with 9 rbi and RHP Daryl Maday (Highland Park) is 2-0, 2.70 in 5 appearances.

UC-DAVIS: SS Brandon Oliver (Euless) leads the team with a .380 average, 15 runs, and 27 hits.

CAL STATE FULLERTON: C John Curtis (McKinney) has started all 13 games for the 5th ranked Titans (11-2), batting .313 with 9 rbi. He is hitting at a .355 clip over the last 2 weeks.

CINCINNATI: 1B Logan Parker (McKinney) tops the Bearcats with 3 homers and 2nd with 12 rbi.

CLEMSON: Freshman SS Stan Widmann (Euless) has started all 10 games for the Tigers.

DALLAS BAPTIST: The Patriots staff also features RHP Randall Taylor (McKinney), who is 3-2, 3.10 in 7 games and RHP Rodney Brantley (Highland Park), who is 2-2 in 6 outings.

IOWA: OF Mike Mogard (Mineral Wells) has been named to the McLeodUSA StarHawks Team as one of the Hawkeyes top student-athletes. An Academic all-Big 10 selection, Mogard is a pre-dentistry major.

KANSAS STATE: RHP Daniel Edwards (Denton) is 0-1, 1.59 in 4 appearances.

McNEESE STATE: It’s been a tough luck year for RHP Jacob Marceaux (McKinney). The junior has compiled a 2.60 era while working 7 or more innings 4 times and fanning 34 in 34.2 innings but has an 0-3 record. Marceaux moved to the closer’s role on March 9, pitching a scoreless inning for a save in a 4-3 victory over 19th ranked Louisiana-Lafayette. OF Charlie Kingery (Highland Park) has a pair of homers and 11 rbi.

MISSOURI: 1B John McKee (Euless) is one of the top hitters in the Big 12 Conference with a .405 average for the 10-4 Tigers. He has 2 homers, 11 rbi, and a team best .643 slugging percentage.

OKLAHOMA: 2B Russell Raley (Graham) has a .309 average for the Sooners. He tops the team with 13 walks and is tied for 2nd with 13 rbi.

OKLAHOMA STATE: 2B Justin Colbert (Graham) leads the Cowboys in runs (23), doubles (6), and rbi (14) while hitting .297 in the leadoff spot. OF Steve Ptak (Graham) has a .294 average and 7 rbi for the 29th ranked Cowboys.

PACIFIC: OF Matt Berezay (Highland Park) has started all 18 games for the Tigers and is tied for the team lead with 4 homers.

PRINCETON: RHP Eric Walz (Mineral Wells) is expected to be a major contributor as the Tigers seek their 5th Ivy League title in the last 6 years. Walz, from Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Worth, was 3-3 as a Princeton freshman in 2004.

PENN STATE: 2B Matt Cavagnaro (McKinney) has a .294 average and 5 rbi for the 4-4 Nittany Lions.

RICE: The 7th ranked Owls (12-3) have been without the services of 3B Greg Buchanan (McKinney), who has played just once since Feb. 15 due to a bruised foot. CF Tyler Henley (Euless) is batting .283 with 8 rbi in 16 games and has been successful on all 4 of his steal attempts.
In addition to Eddie Degerman and Josh Geer (see above), Rice has received strong efforts from RHP Bryce Cox (McKinney), who is 1-1, 2.61 with 3 saves in 8 games; RHP Ryne Tacker (Coppell), 1-0, 2.45 in 5 games; and RHP Bobby Bell (Weatherford), who has not allowed an earned run in 6.2 innings in his 5 outings.

ST.MARY’S (TX): 2B John Alvarez (Graham) has a .421 average and 16 rbi for the 10-3 Rattlers. Alvarez has handled 41 chances in the field without an error.

SAM HOUSTON STATE: The heart of the Bearkats offense is provided by TCL-bound players. RF Dustin Martin (Graham) is at .341 in 15 games. 2B Isaias Garcia (Euless) is hitting .338 with 4 homers and a team high 16 rbi. SS Jose Salazar (McKinney) has a .306 mark and 15 rbi. CF Roy Merritt (Graham), .283 with 9 rbi, went 3-4 with 4 rbi in a 21-1 victory over Texas Southern on March 9.

SOUTH ALABAMA: OF Tyler Jones (Highland Park) is hitting .279 for the 8-3 Jaguars.

TEXAS: LHP Kenn Kasparek (McKinney) is 2-0, 3.18 for the top-ranked Longhorns (18-1).

TEXAS A&M: The 17th ranked Aggies (12-5) were 3-0 in last weekend’s Round Rock Classic, defeating USC, Notre Dame, and Texas State. 2B Parker Dalton (Mineral Wells) was 6-16 in those 3 games and is hitting .275 while starting all 17 games. DH Todd Sebek (Mineral Wells) went 4-7 with 4 rbi to lift his average to .302 with 10 rbi. OF Keith Stein (Euless) was 4-8 with 4 rbi and has a .263 average and 10 rbi.
RHP Kyle Nicholson (Weatherford) earned the victory in a 13-5 win over Notre Dame on March 5, issuing one run in 3.1 relief innings to lower his era to 3.38. RHP Blake Rampy (Euless) worked 2 scoreless innings in that contest.

TEXAS TECH: OF Chris Williams (Coppell) is hitting .309 with 9 rbi and a team best 19 walks for the 27th ranked Red Raiders (14-3). INF Matt Smith (McKinney) has a .313 average in 10 games.

WAKE FOREST: RHP Kyle Young (Euless) is 2-0, 1.38 in 9 appearances for the Demon Deacons (9-7), defeating Ball State in relief in his last outing on March 8. RHP Charlie Mellies (Euless) is 2-1, 2.31 in 5 games. He worked 4.2 relief innings without an earned run to defeat Virginia on March 4.

WICHITA STATE: Three TCL players have been key offensive contributors for the 9th ranked Shockers (15-1). DH Tyler Hill (Coppell) is among the Missouri Valley Conference leaders in batting at .408 with 13 rbi. RF Blake Hurlbutt (McKinney) has a .370 mark with 7 rbi. 2B Damon Sublett (Coppell) leads the team with 15 rbi to go along with a .356 average. The freshman, who is also 1-0 with 2.1 scoreless innings in 2 relief outings, drove in both runs in a 2-1 win over South Florida on March 5.
RHP Jared Simon (Euless) is 1-0, 2.45, pitching 3 scoreless innings in relief on March 4 at Hawaii. LHP Rob Musgrave (Euless) has a pair of saves in 7 games including that 2-1 victory over South Florida on March 5.

WRIGHT STATE: 2B Brandan Rubenstein (Weatherford) is batting .438 in 7 games, going 5-5 in an 18-8 win over Murray State on March 6.

WEATHERFORD COLLEGE: Coached by Jeff Lightfoot (Weatherford), the Coyotes are 14-2. LHP Donald Furrow (Weatherford) pitched 4 shutout innings in a start on March 7 vs. Crowder J.C. before leaving with a chest injury, sustained in a rundown collision. He is day-to-day.
