MCKINNEY — The Tris Speaker Division utilized three home runs and stellar pitching to beat the Rogers Hornsby Division, 5-2, in the second annual Brookshire�s McCormick TCL all-star game on Monday at Gabe Nesbitt Field.
More than 1,000 fans showed up on a perfect night for baseball, showcasing the Texas Collegiate League in front of a live television audience on Fox Sports Net Southwest.
Coppell�s Adam Moore was named the game�s Outstanding Player after he doubled and homered in his two at-bats. McKinney�s Brett Robinson earned Outstanding Pitcher honors by striking out two of the three batters he faced.
The in-game fireworks started in the fifth with the Hornsby Division leading, 1-0. Moore and Tyler Jones launched back-to-back solo homers off losing pitcher Joshua Miller to give their team the lead.
The Speaker all-stars struck again in the sixth. C.J. Ebarb was hit by a pitch with two outs, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on Casey Bond�s single. Greg O�Neill followed with a single to score Bond and give the Speaker all-stars a 4-1 cushion.
In the seventh, Matt Cavagnaro blasted an opposite-field home run to give the Speaker all-stars a four-run lead, which they carried to the ninth.
The Hornsby all-stars threatened in the ninth as Michael Harkins was hit by a pitch, Parker Dalton singled and John Ingram was plunked to load the bases with nobody out.
Bryce Cox came on to pitch and struck out Clint Arnold and Kern Watts before Clay Britton, who drove in both Hornsby Division runs, laced an RBI single that brought the go-ahead run to the plate.
Brian Spear made things interesting, but his long fly ball was caught in deep center field.
Cox notched the save and Jacob Ramos, the fifth of 10 pitchers, was credited with the win after working a scoreless fifth inning.
Earlier in the day, Dustin Martin of Graham won the home-run derby.
